The meaning of the popular phrase “Carpe Diem” has evolved over the last two thousand years and has inspired many along the way to achieve the unobtainable, do what said couldn’t be done and life like there’s no tomorrow. We see it all over our culture from music videos, graduation speeches to biblical passages. A very popular figure in the hip hop world Drake even made a song about the very idea that we speak of. In Drake’s song “The Motto” he coined the acronym YOLO meaning “You only live once”, he speaks to his fans and listeners encouraging them that you only live once so mine as well enjoy every day like it’s your last. He is a very popular artist so when he promotes these things it really has an impact on the listeners whether they know it or not. Since we know the meaning of “Carpe Diem” is to seize the day yet people have their own interpretation of the meaning it begs the question, is seizing the day by living life to the fullest with no regard for the future and leaving the past behind a good or bad thing?
